Living in Laurel Canyon in about mid-1970, Dabek
played a couple of times at Doug Weston’s
Troubadour and then teamed up with some musicians
(Patrick McDonald, Jim Clinton) to form a group
called Magic Ring.  It was a laid-back atmosphere in
the Canyons those days, before the drugs got nasty
and dealers started carrying guns. Magic Ring
practiced for about three months and played the
Troubadour and a couple of gigs around L.A. They
hooked up with a “producer” who got them into the
studio to record “All Alone, All Along” which is
included in this collection.  The Magic Ring version of
this song was taken from the old wax masters which
had been played one too many times. The group didn’t
stay together too long, and Dabek started work on his
piano compositions, earning a living and going to Los
Angeles Valley College. Pat went on to play bass in
Billy Joel’s road band.
