About the 1980's Music

As all art is tied to technique and the tools available for expression,
the eighties were no exception. With the advent of computer
technology and its adaptability to musical composition, musician's
found a wide-open field to romp around in, and they did.  Heavy
metal and punk had their heyday, rap was everywhere, megapop
stars were born (Michael Jackson, Madonna, etc...) and most
importantly a whole "new wave" of creativity surfaced.  Almost out
of nowhere, independent artists began having a great time producing,
writing and distributing their own music. Since the means of
production were suddenly in the hands of the artist (not just the
record company) the possibilities were increased exponentially.
Much of popular music became infused with electronic sounds, and
the synthesizer grew into full-scale adolescence, flaunting irreverence
and disregard for convention just about everywhere.
Dabek's acquisition of multitrack equipment and a wide range of
samplers, synths and other electronic instruments led him to his
cloistered studio environment, leaving the piano for a time to delve
into the unknown of personal production. The first cohesive album
project Chemical Balance was a radical shift from the laid back
styles of the past and led to an extremely creative time, for better or
for worse. It must be said that perhaps the greatest pleasure
in making music is the process itself, rather than the result.
Whatever the outcome, if the artist found the expression
he or she needed, then its purpose must have been fulfilled.
